The 1920s, also known as the“Roaring Twenties,” was a turning point in American
culture and history. Firstly, the prohibition laws were very controversial
throughout American citizens and whether or not it should be allowed. It caused
a lot of crime and encouraged people to buy and consume alcohol illegally. In
addition, fundamentalism was the belief that everything in the bible was the
liberal truth. The Scopes Trial displayed fundamentalism when John Scopes, a
high school teacher, was accused of teaching Darwinism. At this time in
Tennessee, it was against the law to teach evolution because it went against
fundamentalist beliefs. The Roaring Twenties was a difficult time for many
Americans so they looked up to heroes for a sense of hope to follow their own
personal dreams. These heroes represented America and everything it stood for.
The evolution of national culture was changed by African Americans with the
development of jazz music as well as advancements in the radio and
phonograph. Finally, the Harlem Renaissance was a time period where African-American
literature helped ease racial tensions.
